Health Review from "Younger Next Year" by Chris Crowley and Henry S. Lodge
by Jennifer Pohl - Office Coordinator on 04/26/11
Happiness mainly comes from building connections by way of giving and receiving love and friendship and emphasizing positive emotions. Work hard and commit to connecting with people in a very powerful and uplifting way. Optimism is a great driving force towards positive outcomes. Optimistic people have less disease and remain highly functional. It all comes from deeply caring about those around you.
Getting enough sleep is good for your health. Sleep improves overall well being. Adequate rest helps reduce stress therefore lowering cortisol levels that can lead to weight gain. Adults should get 7-8 hours of rest per night and children 8-10. Try to keep a regular sleep schedule to reduce your tension and stress. By doing so, you may see less weight gain and have the ability to stay in a healthy weight range.
Keeping the mouth clean and oral plaque levels low will reduce that chance of oral bacteria and gum disease contributing to heart disease. Bacteria in oral plaque releases waste material that sends signals to the body’s immune system. The immune system starts the inflammation process to kill the bacteria. A person with gum disease and high levels of plaque/inflammation will release bacteria and cytokines into the bloodstream simply by chewing. These bacteria and cytokines cause damage to blood vessel linings and triggers build up of plaque on arterial walls. With this connection between dental and arterial plaque it is imperative to keep the mouth clean and remove as much plaque in the mouth as possible.
Exercise Summary from "Younger Next Year" by Chris Crowley and Henry S. Lodge
by Jennifer Pohl - Office Coordinator on 04/20/11The stress of exercise is good; you tear down muscles when working out hard to then build them back up again stronger. Inflammation is turned on by exercise which then turns on repair. It is recommended to exercise 6 days a weeks, 4 days aerobically and 2 days of strength training. Aerobic exercise can be anything you enjoy (enjoying an activity means you'll stay with it) such as jogging, biking, swimming, rowing, skiing, skating - anything that makes you move to a point that your heart rate goes up and makes your heart muscles work hard for 45-60 minutes. Strength training involves free weights or weight bearing machines that stress or completely tax your muscles. Lifting heavy weights stops bone loss and reduces muscle atrophy.
Nutrition Summary from "Younger Next Year" by Chris Crowley and Henry S. Lodge
by Jennifer Pohl - Office Coordinator on 04/20/11Avoid eating bad foods and eat less of everything. Remember to keep portion control in your mind. Think about the quality of the food you are eating. Starch is a bad carbohydrate consisting of white foods like potatoes, white rice, white bread and everything made with refined flour. Good carbs (found in nature) like fruits, vegetables and whole grains have fewer calories and give you a full feeling stomach. The good fat is unsaturated fat found in olive oil, nuts and fish such as tuna, salmon and sardines. We need to stay away from saturated fat which is found in red meat and full fat dairy and trans fat which is an artificial fat the food industry came up with - it is in fried foods, doughnuts, cookies, crackers, etc. Eat wholesome fats, proteins and good carbs.
Review Thoughts from "Younger Next Year" by Chris Crowley and Henry S. Lodge
by Jennifer Pohl - Office Coordinator on 04/19/11
- Some aspects of biological aging are inevitable but most of what you feel of aging is optional.
- The downward slope of feeling your joints ache, becoming tired and listless and generally feeling weak is something you can change.
- It is a choice - your decision to feel Younger Next Year by deciding to live your life differently.
- It comes down to 3 things - Exercise, Nutrition and Commitment
- Exercise is the main key to feeling, looking and being a healthier person. This main component alone can definitely change your life and help you age better.
- Nutrition involves eating the way you know you should but probably don't. We should educate ourselves on better fuel for our bodies. Getting down to your true weight is important. Quit eating crap and start eating less.
- Commitment comes from caring. Be involved, set goals and work hard. Believe and care about people, family, friends, your job and hobbies.
The book Younger Next Year dives in to these components to give you the tools you need to achieve longer, passionate and more active lives.

How Toothpaste Works!
by Jennifer Pohl - Office Coordinator on 03/08/11
- Abrasive Action: That abrasive agent in toothpaste physically removes solid particles in the mouth by abrasive action. It also helps in removing food stains and polishing tooth surfaces. It is an established fact that Tooth Powders have almost twice the abrasive action of toothpaste.
- Antiseptic Action: Toothpaste contains antimicrobial agents such as Xylitol which inhibit the growth of bacteria in the mouth which is especially helpful in gingivitis.
- Action of Fluoride: Fluoride is an important aspect of toothpaste. It replaces the hydroxypatite of the tooth with fluoropatite which is not only much stronger but also resistant to caries.
George Washington's Dentures
by Jennifer Pohl - Office Coordinator on 01/26/11
Contrary to popular belief, George Washington's famous dentures weren't made from wood. His four pairs of custom chompers were crafted from gold, ivory, lead and a mixture of human, donkey and um, hippopotamus teeth. (Take care of yours and you won't have to think about it!)

How Healthy is the Air in Your Home?
by Jennifer Pohl - Office Coordinator on 07/12/10
With every breath, you and your family could be exposing themselves to a radioactive gas called Radon. You can't see, smell, or taste radon; but it may be a problem in your home. This is a health risk because radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. The longer your exposure to radon, the greater the health risk.
Radon comes from the natural (radioactive) breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water and gets into the air you breathe. The radioactive gas typically moves up through the ground to the air and into your home through cracks and holes in the foundation. Radon can be found in high levels all over the U.S. and can get into any type of building. Testing is the only way to know if you are at risk for radon. Luckily, testing is inexpensive and easy. Radon detection kits are available from your local health department or hardware store. Testing should be conducted in the lowest living area of your home and short term tests take only a few days. You should fix your home if your radon level is 4 (pCi/L), picocuries per liter, or higher with repeated tests.
My family and I recently tested our home for radon and found the levels of the radioactive gas to be too high. After repeated tests to verify the results, we decided to fix our home. In some cases, sealing cracks in floors and walls may help reduce radon. In other cases, such as ourselves, simple systems called mitigation systems can be installed to reduce radon levels. These mitigation systems seal off sump pump areas and use pipes and fans to remove radon gas from below the foundation before it can enter the home. A special trained, EPA certified, radon contractor must be obtained to install these systems.
Radon is estimated to cause thousands of cancer deaths in the U.S. each year. Get your home tested with the easy to use detection kits so that you can be assured that your family is not being exposed to a major health risk. Test your home for radon so that your family will breathe a lot easier.
Tooth Whitening Options
by Jennifer Pohl - Office Coordinator on 06/04/10
Our NiteWhite system is a take home kit that is reliant completely on the patient. We would have him/her come to the office for a quick visit to take impressions of their teeth. Once the trays are made, we call the patient to have them pick them up along with the bleaching kit. While this system is cheaper ($195) it takes significantly more time and responsibility.
Our second option is Zoom! Chairside Whitening. This system is done completely in office. A patient is with us for about two hours but leaves with white teeth. No more needs to be done at home! For $349 you can have white teeth with the least amount of hassle.
Both systems are equally effective. Patient's time and finances are the biggest limiting factors. Call today with questions or to set up an appointment.
New Patient Exam
by Jennifer Pohl - Office Coordinator on 05/04/10We greeted a new patient today who said when she was leaving that she had never before received such a thorough examination. We thanked her for her compliment and said that we take special care to really discover what is going on with our patients, dentally as well as with their overall health.
The Only Thing We Have To Fear Is...The Dentist.
by Jennifer Pohl - Office Coordinator on 04/27/10
The number one reason many people avoid the dentist is fear. The thought of pain unnerves most individuals. High anxiety afflicts most dental patients, even those who go for regular check-ups. We in the dental profession know this. Most of us go the extra mile to alleviate the fears and minimize pain. We have many drugs at our disposal for pain and anxiety control. Talk with your dentist at your initial visit to see what would work best for you. Believe it or not, dental visits can be made comfortable with medications and some good old fashioned TLC.
